Bible Reading: Hebrews 1:1-4 (CEB)
1 In the past, God spoke through the prophets to our ancestors in many times and many ways. 2 In these final days, though, he spoke to us through a Son. God made his Son the heir of everything and created the world through him. 3 The Son is the light of God’s glory and the imprint of God’s being. He maintains everything with his powerful message. After he carried out the cleansing of people from their sins, he sat down at the right side of the highest majesty. 4 And the Son became so much greater than the other messengers, such as angels, that he received a more important title than theirs.
Undercover Boss is a TV show where top executives from large companies agree to forego their corner office to spend time on the ground level of their business. The executives discover inefficiency, unresolved issues, and problem employees in almost every situation. However, a great many executives are stunned by the pleasant attitudes and hard work of some of their employees who make a fraction of the executive’s salary. Once the “undercover boss” is revealed, the workers have a newfound respect for how much their boss cared for them individually, cared about their situations, and cared about the company.
The inconveniences those CEO experienced and the benefit to their employees and companies pale dramatically against the story of Jesus Christ. While God for centuries had spoken and conveyed the divine will through the prophets, the Creator of the world takes a bold and unique step by coming to us as an infant and living among us for more than three decades. Jesus wasn’t undercover, though he was unrecognized and disregarded by most. Despite the fact that messengers announced Jesus’ coming, people couldn’t or wouldn’t lay aide their own struggles to observe the One in their midst.
The writer of Hebrews assures us that God values the Son so much that God made Jesus the “heir of all things,” “superior to the angels (NIV). Jesus’ work among us, his obedience to the Father’s plan, and his death on the cross opened a way for us to be cleansed of our sins.
Jesus finished his task of sustenance and purification and then took his rightful place alongside the Father, where he sits today advocating for those of us still working here on earth.
Prayer
O Lord, we praise you and thank you for loving us and providing a way for us to be in your holy presence. Amen.
